FARMVILLE, Va. — The Longwood Lancers are headed south to take on the Charleston Southern Buccaneers after winning six of their past seven games.
The original matchup was postponed in early February, with the Big South Conference adding the two-game series on Monday, Feb. 15. The back-to-back games will be held on Thursday, Feb. 18 and Friday, Feb. 19 at the Buccaneer Field House in Charleston, South Carolina.
Fired Up Lancers
The fiery Lancers (9–14, 8–9 Big South) are the hottest team in the Big South, with six wins since January 19, beating first-place Winthrop. This ties the 2020–21 season with 2009–10 for the program’s winningest stretch of the Division I era.
The team’s current streak mirrors their end-of-season run last year, where they produced eight wins in their last 11 regular-season games. Currently, the Lancers have seven wins in the last 10 games under their belt.
February has proven to be lucky for the Lancers, as they have earned a 12–6 record in the month since the 2018–19 season. Last year, the team went 7–2 in February, and are currently 3–0. Winning both games against the Buccaneers would bring them to 5–0, and increase their conference wins to 10–9.
Last Time Out
Last time they hit the court the Lancers left Willett Hall with an 83–73 win over commonwealth rival Hampton University. Despite Hampton putting in 25 points and eight turnovers in the first-half, Longwood managed an 18-point lead by halftime. Four Lancers scored in the double digits: Juan Munoz, Jesper Granlund, Leslie Nkereuwem and Zac Watson, which brought them to a 10-point victory over the Pirates.
Buccaneers Hit the Court
The Buccaneers ( 2–16, 1–3 Big South) traveled to High Point University to take on the Panthers in a two-game series on Feb. 11–12. Despite a loss during game one, the team came back strong on night two and pulled out a win, beating High Point with a 69–68 score. Senior Phlandrous Fleming Jr. made the game-winning three-point basket with less than :03 left, bringing the Buccaneers to victory.
Lancers vs. Buccaneers
The Lancers and Buccaneers will meet in Charleston, S.C. for the 17th and 18th times in series history. In the 2019–20 season, Longwood pulled off a sweep, marking their first win in Willett Hall against the Buccaneers, crushing their previous six-game winning streak.
The series will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 18 and 6 p.m. on Feb. 19. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+ inside of the Buccaneer Field House.
